The American legion
An organization founded in Paris, France on March 15th, 1919, by a group of war weary Veterans of World War One. The Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress as a “patriotic veterans’ organization” – operated by veterans, for veterans. To read the history of the American Legion, click HERE.
While you must be a Veteran to be a Legionnaire, you don’t have to be in order to help one. To find out ways to help Veterans and our active-duty servicemen/ women and their families in the Kelso community, click HERE

“Never leave a man behind.” Most folks associate this phrase with the United States military. In fact, most branches have their own version of this sacred principle. The United States Air Force says, “I will need never leave an Airman behind.” Soldiers the United States Army say, “I will never leave a fallen comrade.” The United State Marine Corps lives and dies by the motto, “Until they are home, no man left behind.”
The American Legion and the Legion Family (Sons of The American Legion, The American Legion Auxiliary) hold dear to this belief. Every single Legion Post across the Nation designates a POW/MIA Empty Chair for every official Legion meeting. This physical representation is a stark reminder of thousands of Prisoners of War, and those Missing in Action who are still unaccounted for and lost to their families.
